Sunrise, volcanos and horse riding...

Hey hey... it's been quite an exciting and tiring Sunday for me :) Left Surabaya at 12am for a 4 hours drive to Mt. Bromo to catch the sunrise at 2800meters above sea level. 7 of us, a driver, an Avanza, a 4x4 hard top and 5 1/2 hours later, we made it just in the nick of time to awe ourselves with the scenic and breath taking view.

After daylight greeted us, we were left with another jaw dropping picturesque view of the volcano Mt. Semeru which stands just above 8600 meters above sea level accompanied with her sister moutains. Attached you will be able to see Mt Semeru and Mt. Bromo passing gasses... haha.

Took a horse ride up to one of the lower sister volcano moutain Mt. Bromo. Me and my new found mode of transportation seem to be getting along very well. I find myself enjoying back horse riding. Quite easy to master once you are able to communicate with the horse. Actually, communication here means getting the horse to do what you want them too :)

The hot springs was also an experience I haven’t had the chance to indulge in. The water was a nice 42.5 degrees and the alkali level is about pH 2.5. It was fun to dip yourself into it as the water stings your eyes and the rain drops on your head. Very relaxing. Too bad it’s not like those Japanese hot springs with natural surroundingsJ. That’ll be great! My next holiday destination? :)

Well, I do believe that this is the first volcano that I’ve been to. For those interested in visiting Indonesia, I would recommend Bandung. It is the place to visit and has plenty of hotels and service apartments. The traffic is a lot better compared to Jakarta and the air is so much cooler and cleaner. Although it’s just below 1000 meters above sea level, the locals are wearing jackets and sweaters as if it’s 16 degrees! Weird. Unfortunately it’s been raining almost every day since I’ve been here. Besides the Volcano (Tangkuban Prahu – with it’s interesting story) and the hot springs, I was told that there is another volcano nearby which is much better than this! I’m making plans to go there this weekend. Good thing I have the company car and driver to bring me around on the weekends. He he he…

The 1830 meter high Tangkuban Prahu volcano is one of Bandung 's main tourist attractions. With its 5 craters of which at least three are still active, it makes for a spectacular sight. Unfortunately, the smell is equally spectacular, the sulphur mostly resembling rotten eggs. The volcano can be reached in less than one and a half hours from Bandung and is approximately 30 minutes from the scruffy horticultural town of Lembang . To get there, take an angkot (minivan) to Lembang and change to another angkot that says Tangkuban Prahu.
The area of which the Tangkuban Prahu volcano forms the heart has been given the name Parahyangan , which translates to ‘home of the spirits' and is considered the spiritual origin of the Sundanese. Legend tells that in the past, a young boy by the name of Sang Kuriang fell in love with his own mother who he hadn't seen for many years (because he'd allegedly killed his father and was kicked out of the house). The mother, upon finding out the awkward family ties between her and ‘her lover', tries to get rid of his affection by giving him the impossible task of building 1000 boats in 1 night. If that wasn't hard enough, she also undermined his attempt by making the roosters cry too early. The son fails and will never be able to marry the love of his life. In anger and frustration, he kicks one of his newly built boats which turns upside down and grows into a mountain. That explains the name Tangkuban Prahu, which means ‘upside down boat'.
The park is a huge area with forests that make for great hikes to the craters. The main crater, kawah ratu , is lined with a selection of tacky tourist shops selling miniature ninja puppets, bonsai trees and hats made out of rabbit fur. This is also where most of the street/mountain vendors hold office with their strawberries and raspberries so be prepared to be followed around with those relentlessly.
The small information centre has a model of the volcanic area and some brochures, but the best way to enjoy the Tangkuban Prahu is to take a walk around the crater. There, the tourist traps are absent and the views of the bubbling mud and steam are quite impressive.
It is possible to walk down to the main kawah ratu crater in record speed of two hours, but make sure you wear appropriate shoes since the ‘road' is rocky and slippery. An alternative route would take you to kawah domas , a crater with a small sulphur mine that can be reached in about 30 minutes and where the main attraction is boiling eggs in the 94-98 degree water.
Admittance to the park is Rp.35,000 for foreigners and Rp. 12,000 for locals, the underlying assumption being that most foreigners are loaded. So unless you look distinctly Indonesian, expect to pay up. Sometimes ‘negotiating' with the staff will bring the price down a bit.

I must say, i'm being very bold here trying out the 'really local' food here in Bandung. This is Bakso Mie campur. Bakso = funny tasting meatballs with not edible stuffs in it :) Found this cool looking 'kampung' shop near one of the site visits and thought "Hey, why not... let's give it a try" Oh ya, Jeruk = orange k.. just fyi.

Mudslide hits thousands of houses in SidoarjoSurabaya (ANTARA News 11/02/2008) - A mudslide flooded thousands of houses at Besuki village in the East Java district of Sidoarjo on Sunday.Prayitno, a victim from the village, said that around 1,453 families have been forced to evacuate after their homes were inundated by the hot mud.He said the level of hot mud had reached over one meter in their houses and therefore they had to flee to safer areas but there were no makeshift tents nor adequate logistic support for them.The mudslide began early on Sunday evening when an embankment burst after days of torrential rains and strong winds.Meanwhile, Sidoarjo Mud Management Board (BPLS) spokesman, Sunarso, said effort to repair the damage was hampered by the speed and force of the mudslide which surged into the village."Anyway, the BPLS has to make every effort to overcome the mud from flowing into larger area," Sunarso said. :) I just uploaded these photos from my camera. So much better from my camera phone photos right? Amazing! 8 BLOCKS on 'Mal Tmn Anggrek', Jakarta. They said that they could feel the floor shake whenever there is an earthquake.. haha, and i'm living on Block 6 21st floor unit C. It's only half the height. If i'm not mistaken, there are over 45 floors there! *gulp*

Oh well, the traffic JAM is as BAD as Manila. That's about all i want to say about it... sigh! Anyway, I'm staying on top of this HUGE shopping complex call Mal Taman Anggrek. There are 8 towers of 40 over floors high apartments on TOP of this HUGE ass building. As you can in the photo, the shopping 'Mal' is not bad.

There is a photo of my room in the apartment and the other photos is my 'cubicle with a view' at the office. haha.. only looking out at the traffic condition.

Well, i'm headed off to East Jawa (Surabaya) for more work tomorrow morning for 10 days. Hopefully will get a chance to get online there...

Massive NTS project happening over there and i'm required to stay in Indonesia for at least a few months! FINALLY! I made the jump. I must admit that standing over the edge was scarier than the jump itself and 40 meters wasn't as exciting as i would expect it to be :) Maybe it's because i was jumping over the sea... if it was LAND, now that's another story! SO, was it an adrenalin rush? OF COURSE! Will i ever do it again?? DEFINITELY! Next time, I'll jump the 134 meters Nevis Highwire Bungy!

In about 9 hours time, i'll be jumping off the Harbour bridge... FOR REAL! Bungy jumping off the bridge..... Bought my ticket today to make sure i go through with it tomorrow.....just so i dont 'chicken out' or have the sudden change my mind....haha. GULP! Now for some mental prep! i can do tis... i can do tis!

Took a free shuttle from Sky Tower to the fish market at the Harbour... the weather wasn't ideal... it rained after i got there. Bought something nice to eat and left for Queens Street... that's the main street in the city. Last night, every Huawei employee in the world gets to eat Mooncakes and ENJOY dinner together... Eat, DRINK and be merry! In New Zealand office, we had ours in the HP8 Chinese Restaurant... very very typical chinese dishes, they actually ordered PIG'S EARS!!! The fish wasn't bad though.. served in the biggest bowl i've ever seen before... don't let the photo fool ya! It filled up the whole 'lazy susan'. Plenty of fish to go around... That wasn't all, if i was not mistaken, there were around 15 dishes!!!! WHAT a NIGHT!

Forget what i said just now! Ran Dong and other CAPs invited me to play FOOTBALL! Finally, haven't touched a ball for ages. We went to Domain Park which is about 10 mins drive from D'nasty apt. We played for 5 mins and haha, KO-ed for 15 mins. Man, I REALLY MISS playing football.. :) Played in the park and then went to the beach (20 mins drive just out of the city) to play some more!

"Man, is this guy down there working or for vacation??... Hey you guys, this are the photo of the customer's office. On the right is the switching room which the 'subbies' are working hard installing the cable ladders before the equipment comes in... well well, what do you know, they've ran out of cable ladders... there goes another few days...I'm sure there are other things to do. We had 'BAK KUT TEH' for dinner... Toon (Yap's girlfriend) was really a good cook. All technical guys except for a marketing guy sitting on my right. Had some white wine and 'lepak' till the rain stopped. Took me about 15 minutes walk to get back my apartment..slept well that saturday night...

Hi guys! So, I'm 4 days late writing the blog... my apologies. I had no internet access. Yup, that’s the reason I'm using for now. Went for dinner with me mom at The Manhattan Fish Market in Sunway Piramid where she accompanied me to buy a pair of pants which matches my graduation blazer... MAN, it difficult to find a pair of pants with the same colour and material as my 5 year old blazer. Finally settled for a Polo pants. Ok mom, see you next month! After filling our stomach, Robin and i decided to go for a test drive. PERSONA! Looks not all that bad actually, except for the funny 'chrome' thingy on the back! Well, i for one, could actually feel some significant changes for the better, better noise insulation... Although, some difficulty opening the boot cause of some design flaws and all.. also, the back seat doesn't really cover the door exposing some of the metallic parts.. besides these two minor stuffs, i would say this car could be a potential buy... :) But i'm still considering vios or civic.. NEVER city!

Oh wow the traffic was TERRIBLE today.. took me more than an hour to reach office. Well, at least the sun was shinning. I've been back for more than a week now and was recently informed that i will be going down to NEW ZEALAND!!! to support the project there... I'm thinking that I'll need to get a bigger luggage bag. The one that can fit 2 MONTHS worth of clothes...that's how long i will be there. At least planned to be there... got to get my arse back by November the 3rd for my sister's wedding...

So, Malaysia is 50 years old now... As i write this blog, National Geografic is showing 'Becoming A King', the coronation of Malaysia's latest king. Suddenly, i felt patriotic... and decides to write a blog in honour of my home coutry, Malaysia, where i was born and raised. So, happy 50th Independence Malaysia! Home sweet home...

Man was i early... arrived at the airport at 1:30pm just to find out that the counter opens at 2pm. Sat and waited and waited and then waited some more... at least the flight was on time. Guess was too excited to go back...as they call it, balikbayan. It's nice to be back... feels really good. Came back just in time to make credit card and other bill payments...sigh :)

Well, my last day here in Makati...never felt more happy to leave. Would i miss this place? I dunno, 2 weeks later, i find myself asking a lot of questions on working overseas...am i cut out for this? How long would i be able to last overseas? These guys have been here for months without going back...I would say that Philippines is not that bad, very similiar with Malaysia. Not so much on the cultural impact and all. I guess it all comes down to "is all these travelling worth it?" "what will i get out of all these?" Sigh,I need more experience and time alone....just to figure it all out!

This, my friend is my senior. Based in Philippines Rep. Office, his name... Eric. He's a good guy. The other photo is the fantastic view from the 53rd floor of PB Com tower. (highest in Manila) It's the best view of Manila i've ever seen.. miles and miles of buildings and houses...it's incredible, jungle of bricks. And the coast line is just there.... see, i didn't know that!

MAAAAAN! That was a long friday night! Didn't plan to go out at all... didn't expect to be invited too.... but anyhow, we ended up in Warehouse. JAM was like usual, MAAAAD! took forever to get there.. picking Christine up wasn't helping either... but, she invited us, so... we managed. After a few drinks, we were all merry and joyfull... letting loose after a loooong week. really long.
Got back about 5am right after McD breakfast... that was a good night.... best thus far!

Rooftop site with a 6m pole. This site is called Paddock. It's located on a hill about 1 hours drive from town.... Nice location, quiet and peaceful housing area. This particular site is
interesting because the neighbours are actually protesting the installation of this site... :) Like any other wealthier neighbourhood. "NO TO CELLPHONE TOWER" ... the site is almost completed. hehee, too bad.

At last, we arrived at my very first "green field" site visit here in Philippines called Avis. This site has a 12 meters tall guyed mast. Interesting design. It took us about an hour of traffic jam to reach this site. Yea, you guessed, because of the traffic...

First few days... getting to know you

Well, soon enough, i've been sent out for site visits. "On-the site training" is what they call this. The guy sitting next to me is the Quality Control Manager from Shenzen. Ma Wen Bo is his name and the last i heard, he's in India. Apparently, he is the guy that made the arrangement for my trip to the Philippines...

This particular site is located right smack in the middle of what i would like to call the "PROJECTS". It's where the hard-core poors are living. Thousands of children running around the streets. This particular site has been halted because of some structural problems....

Hotel? nooo, service apartment la!

Ate with my driver Arman at Chow Kings... the local chinese fast food restaurant near the service apartment. Wasn't really my cup of tea but hey, i wanted to try something new and was quite hungry. So, we decided to stop at the first fast food restaurant we could find. It was either KFC, McD, Pizza Hut or Chow Kings. The decision was pretty obvious....

Arrived in Room 2002 of Asian Mansion late in the evening. Luckily they managed to get me a room because my application for room reservation was only done the day before. Quickly unpacked and got comfortable as soon as i could. Not a bad place. The lightings were kinda dim and gloomy though.

Unfortunately there were no internet connection in the room. That was really hard to get used to as i have always been living with an internet connection. So i uploaded the photos i took for the day and to email out the next day in the office.

First Impressions... alway lasts!

You know what they say, "The first impression always lasts"... well, in this case, the infamous traffic here is the lasting impression. I guess i'm just not used to it yet.

Attached is the first every Jeepney that i've ever seen. You can actually fit at least 18 grown ups in there. And it even has it's own route and stops. There are so many of them over here. Kinda like the notorious Bus Mini which was running around KL last time. They just stops and go as they please. Haven't seen any of them speeding though. Maybe because it's always jammed up here in Manila!

Been taking photos of every single odd thing that i see. Typical first timer and i definately pass as a tourist. It took more than an hour which feels like an eternity for me to reach the office which is still in town. Level 10 of Robinson Galleria or also known as GCC.

First day... my arrival

Finally, i have arrived. Looking outside, man, the weather aint that good. Looking out the tiny airplane window, looks like it's been raining for some time now. Wonder if there is a typhoon this time of the year?

After claiming my luggage and nervously walk through customs (not that i have anything to worry about) waited outside for the appointed driver to greet me. I must confess, i was expecting him to be holding the 'HUAWEI' logo and "Mr. CHEW WENG SOON' printout waiting for me as i come out of the arrivals... but, instead, had to walk to the extended waiting area after receiving an sms from my colleague. ARMAN is the driver's name. Soh is the engineer that smsed me and apparently was in the same flight as i was in. So then, here we go...my journey has began. I have arrived.
